If you love Hemingway, literature, travel, photography and are intrigued by the indelible effect of location on a writer’s journey, I have a treat for you. My friend, author and photographer Robert Wheeler, has recently released a beautiful and important new book: Hemingway’s Havana: A Reflection of the Writer’s Life in Cuba. Many may not know that Hemingway lived in Cuba for over twenty years, during which time the country’s seas, skies, people and culture captivated him, providing a haven he’d not previously experienced and inspiring what many consider to be his masterpiece, The Old Man and The Sea.
As he did with Hemingway’s Paris, Mr. Wheeler seeks out and discovers how a particular location, in this case Cuba’s emotion-charged, visually stunning and unique heritage, influenced Hemingway’s work. His text and photographs immerse us in the rich, colorful atmosphere of Havana, presenting a new perspective on the relationship between author and place.
Mr. Wheeler’s unique vision lies in taking us with him and guiding our attention towards the hidden details and locales that Hemingway saw and experienced and in doing so, bringing a greater understanding as to why this land of contrasts was Heminway’s chosen home for so long.
Over 100 original photographs by Mr. Wheeler visually tell this story. Here I’m sharing here just a few of my favorite spreads so as not to spoil the surprises for you when you read it yourself, which I highly recommend that you do. This is a substantial and gorgeous book that I’m thrilled to have in my library.
