Okay, well, in fact, my birthday was yesterday. But I was out all day celebrating. We had lunch with my family at Ivar’s Salmon House on Lake Union, then David and I popped home to change into shooting (grubbier) attire. As a birthday treat, he took me to the Bellevue Botanic Gardens “Garden d’Lights”.
Normally it’s season has ended by the first of the year but they extended it due to bad weather over the holidays. We’d never been and what a fantastic way to spend a birthday! And as we were walking on total awe of the display, a full moon emerged from tattered clouds, looking for all the world like the “ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas” of Alfred Noyes’ fabulous poem The Highwayman.
My Birthday Present
Each year we attend the Bellevue Arts Fair in July. Last year I discovered a new artist there, Marina Terauds, a master engraver and lithographer, and fell in love with all her work. I bought two small pieces but the one I really wanted was this one, “Nature Book”. I had put it out of my mind but my totally awesome husband contacted Marina and bought it for my birthday, having it especially inscribed by Marina. What an incredible surprise! Here it is framed and hanging in our dining room. – g
