I love to put beautiful focal points around our garden that add a bit of magic, without spending very much. Since our property is relatively huge (or seems it since D and I do all the maintenance ourselves) most pieces that I got when we first moved in became kind of swallowed up amongst all the greenery. But I’ve since figured out that I should concentrate on an area and put at least a focal point in it. This makes such a difference. For example, I’ve place three gorgeous stone birdbaths on each of the terraced front lawns and it’s amazing how your eye goes right to them, handy since that’s where the birds hang out, too!
I personally distinguish between ‘garden decor’ and ‘garden art’. Garden decor is akin to throw pillows and knick knacks and things you put around a space that you like to look at and that give it personality. Garden art I would compare more to a fine painting or sculpture in a room that most likely costs much more than the throw pillow on the sofa. Fine art is precious, needs to be insured and is an investment.
So, how would I classify the lovely Cleo above? I got her today at a wonderful discount statuary place that was having a 50% off sale. She cost less than lunch for four at a local restaurant. Is she art? Or decor? She has no snob appeal, she’s concrete, not bronze or marble and if she gets a bit banged up, it’s no problem.
I would have to say she fits in the ‘decor’ category, which is just fine with me. I plan to go back to the where I got her (Abbodanza, downtown Seattle, no website) and collect up more (inexpensive) eye candy for our garden!

up with sore gums (recovering from oral surgery) so surfing around a bit.. and hey, somehow I can't quite equate your photography in any way with the word 'crummy' :)
