What a glorious day today was!! Cerulean blue sky, summer temps and hours spent in the garden (albeit mostly pulling weeds!).
I’ve been waiting to share this post for months. My blog admin panel tells me I began it in mid November.
At the time, I was going to post photos of my autumn daffodil planting, but decided to wait and show the results as well! (The above photos use a background of botanical prints by Basilius Besler and date from 1612. Narcissus have been loved in gardens for a long time.)
I keep notes of plants and flowers I want to put in the garden and especially chose these three narcissus – ‘Sweetness’, ‘Cheerfulness’ and ‘poeticus’ – for their phenomenal fragrance. I ordered dozens from Brent and Becky’s and was a bit late getting them in the ground as we were gone in September and October in Chile and Peru. My plan was to have a cutting garden so I could bring in bouquet after bouquet of these heavenly smelling charmers.
As soon as the bulbs arrived, I got to work digging a long (30 foot) trench at the end of our back lawn where it borders our little woods at the edge of our property.
Lots of digging, cutting of roots, and preparing of soil along with liberal sprinkling of bulb fertilizer. Then carefully placing the precious bulbs and tucking them in for winter.
And then, lots of waiting!
Some may aspire to spa treatments and fancy cars and fine dining, but to me, THIS is luxury – to go out into my own garden and cut armfuls of the sweetest smelling, prettiest springtime flowers.
And since I was late in planting, they are still coming up, well into May.
(Also called the Poet’s Daffodil and Pheasant’s Eye daffodil, it was one of the first ever to be cultivated. It is mentioned in early Greek writings and is the one associated with the myth of Narcissus.)
The most fragrant, the latest blooming and the longest lasting – besides being very poetic, it is awfully sweet and always cheerful.
Thank you, as always, for your visits and lovely comments on my last post. And thank you to Carolyn for mentioning my blog in her gorgeous post and sending new friends my way.
Have a happy, sunny, sweet, cheerful and poetic weekend!

Dear Georgianna, Exactly my sentiments, however, only you have written it better than anyone could. The entire post is outstanding! A few years ago, I planted a very large area with daffodils of many varieties. I love them all but the Poeticus or Pheasant Eye narcissus is my most favorite.
And thank you for always leaving such nice comments on my blogposts. They are so appreciated.

I love that you waited to show us the whole sequence! Those botanical prints are the best! The seventeenth century is definitely a place I would visit in a heart beat. I loved my 17th c. poetry class the most in college. It was like breathing in flower scent for me to go each time. I could not wait to attend. Bounced all the way down the walk after class. This post is like that feeling, full of fresh ideas, senses, light, thought, planning. Georgianna, this was wonderful. Blessings.

Your soil looks amazing! So brown and rich. We have a lot of clay in our soil. It's not near as pretty as yours. I really enjoyed your sharing the steps involved in planting bulbs and then seeing the beauty of your labor. You take the most splendid images of flowers. True talent. ♥

Your flowers are stunning! I also love the flowers in front of the prints.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

When you put your hands on a camera, magic happens. It flows from the screen and gives me joy. Gardening is an act of patience. Season to season.

Totally charming, and for me this IS luxury, arms full of fresh flowers from your very own garden that you planted and waited to see. I am busy clearing my front garden, planting little box hedges from cuttings a took a few years back and then plan to plant cottage flowers inside to go with the roses climbing behind. Wonderfully exciting to see a bare patch of earth and anticipating how it will look! Today planting more, then I must do a Blog post, we have a baby bird in the garden, a wee bit early out of the nest I think but seems ok! Catherine xx

How beautiful, I cannot believe that they're still coming up in May (then again, I really don't know the first thing about gardening). I especially love the picture with all the different flowers in the bottles/decanters. Such stunning colours… Great post, thanks for sharing. Love from London x

Wow, so beautiful and inspirational. So much fun to see both pictures from last autumn and how it turned out. Most of my tulips were eaten by deer so I'm definitely planting more daffodils this autumn. Lovely poetic post my friend! :)

When waiting turns sweeter by the day!! I love how you used the botanical drawings in the first few images – it looks so elegant. Then these last few Poeticus with blue background are simply something very special! Just love seeing what you've been up to… xJanine

These photos are simply stunning! I especially love how you've combined the real flowers with the botanical prints. I'm a bit envious because my daffodils didn't flower at all last year, and yours look so lovely! I hope I have better luck this year!
Suze says
Luxurious indeed! Daffodils are possibly my favorite flowers ever and it's really great to grow your owns! I'm not very good at gardening but bulbs are not sooo difficult and my hiacynts gave me some nice satisfaction this year!
Cheers,
Suze

I love the juxtaposition of the fresh flowers and the antique prints – what a brilliant idea and such beautiful images.

One of my favorite things about you is that you wait impatiently for your daffodils. That you dream of flowers and scent more than jewels and clothes. I love that about you!

OK OK I know this is last year's posting…but I adored finding it, and giggled when you wrote "sniff with abandon" about these beautiful flowers!! hehe!! I love these photos! sigh! swoon! Of course, I also LOVE your newest collage of Welcome Spring! too!! It's sooo rainy and dreary here today, thank you for the creative and beautiful posting here – I love how you mixed the real flowers with the pretty vintage drawings (and how you did that in you new post too)! you clever, clever girl! :)
Thanks for all you do, Georgianna!
Love,
Sherilyn :)
