We’ve been unexpectedly away on the Olympic Peninsula for the last few days, chasing an elusive light for our B&B; client.
The weather looked promising so we embarked with D’s niece, Winnie (visiting from Chile), for a short day trip, which evolved into several long patient days (sans charging cords, internet, batteries and toothbrushes) until we had the light we needed to capture the beautiful gardens overlooking the sea. We mostly shot video but I couldn’t resist a few stills of the backlit summer plantings, thick with bees and hummingbirds.
The drive and ferry rides afforded me a few quiet moments to read your overwhelmingly kind and insightful comments on my last post. Thank you very, very much for taking the time to respond. I so appreciate your honesty and wise words. I realize that inviting comments about the subject of comments is somewhat like entering a house of mirrors but it has been helpful to me to know that I’m not alone in considering this and that there are sane ways to handle it.
I also realized the value each of your viewpoints and that, scattered around the world as we are, we hold a unique position – never before, has a group of like-minded souls been able to share thoughts and feelings and advice in a brief instant. I sometimes find it is a stretch to reach out over the continents and embrace all of you but ultimately one cannot deny the connections one has and must take ownership for them. I can’t help but feel that one day, we will harness our collective powers for good and, simultaneously and lightning fast, be able to bring a sparkle of sunlight to a world greatly in need of it.
So we finally did get the light, very early this morning, that threw its arms across the acre of lawn and made the blue of the sea match the blue of the sky, with Victoria, Canada, hovering on the horizon, exactly what our client requested.

p. s. As for the title of this post, it’s a slightly sly reference to a location I shot yesterday for our client, a local attraction as it were. While D stayed at the B&B; to catch the hoped for afternoon light, Winnie and I drove west on the famed Highway 101, winding through the Olympic Rain Forest, past mysterious Lake Crescent and then south to the town of Forks.
If you are readers of a certain series of books (I’m not), you’ll know the significance of Forks. And if you aren’t, I leave you with a little clue:

There are so many beautiful spots over on the peninsula, thanks for sharing yet another one. Your writing always always inspires me, and yet makes me jealous:)
I must have missed the last post, but I went back to read it in reference to the issue of comments.
I never considered that I would get a "comment back on my comment". I must admit, yours have been the first. Pleasantly surprised as I was, I'm amazed that you can take the time to do this.
I personally don't think it's necessary. Commenting is one of the reasons that I haven't uploaded anything to Flickr in so long. It used to take up alot of my day, I just don't have the time now. I think everyone would completely understand if that were not a part of your blogging life.
We would all rather see you spend the time creating your beautiful posts than responding back to comments!!
Yiota says
These are just gorgeous! divine!
As for the comments issue, I too think that it's not necessary to comment back to everyone. For instance, there are some blocks that inspire me and others that soothe my soul and I usually let the writer know that I like their posts but this doesn't mean they have to like what I post, too. I don't mind that at all. On the other hand, there have been cases of me not returning a comment because sometimes some posts are too long for me to read or I just don't have any time and I don't just want to say 'thank you for your comment' without actually knowing what their post is about.

i am so happy that i stumbled onto your blog! such beautiful images (such lovely light in the first one) and i really was interested in your last post about "comments" as i have been ruminating about that alot lately. i have fallen in love with creating my blog, but the comment thing, well sometimes it takes the fun out of it for me. i mean, i love getting the comments, of course, but don't always have time to "return the favor".
Gina says
Dear Georgianna, You set out on a mission to catch the light and you found it and captured it so beautifully.

You certainly can extract the best of every flower you photograph G. I look at some and think dreamy, others peaceful…and all are awesome.
Waiting for the right light to create the effect you want must take patience and yours certainly pays off.
Thanks for sharing.

Does someone actually have that truck and license plate? Oh my, they are a fan.
Speaking of being a fan, I'm a fan of yours. I especially love all the dappled like and the sparkly feel of these images. So lovely.
Happy Fourth, G. To you and yours.
Georgianna says
Thank you sooo much!!!
Relyn, the truck with the license plate are at the Forks Visitor's Center. I believe it's there just for photo ops for the tourists. I haven't seen the films but I believe it's a different kind of truck even. But this one was great looking with its rusty grill anyway! xo

I'm so glad you did a few shots to share with us. Looks like a wonderful place! They are simply gorgeous as usual Georgianna. :) I also enjoyed the photos from previous posts.
Of course I had to read your dilemma post too. It's not an easy thing to answer. I must admit that I'm not the best person to reply or acknowledge that I've read – but of course I always do and appreciate it so much. However when I do (and I should try to do that more often) I do it differently. Sometimes in the comments of my own blog/flickr, sometimes through e-mail and every now and then (usually?) through a comment on the persons blog. I think all those options are okay and it depends on the comments. Sometimes comments and answers are interesting for more than one person and then I think a comment in the comment section is the right way to go. Hope you understand what I mean… :)
Oh dear, what a long comment! Thanks for letting me think about this.
Have a lovely and hopefully relaxing weekend! xo Karin

Dear G, Coming here is always a soothing experience… like a cool breeze in July! And that is something which will be in short supply here in the east over the next few days… lol, so I thank you! :)
As for the comments, I've found that I do need to find a happy medium… if someone asks me a specific question, and their email address is listed, I will often email the answer directly to them. Otherwise, I will leave an answer in my own comments. Like everyone else, I love comments but I just don't have the time to respond to each and every one; and I do not expect that from anyone else either.
Have a wonderful Fourth of July holiday!
xoxo,
Mary
