Bonjour! Peony season, one of the best times in Paris, is well underway so I’ve brought you a little photo essay of some recent images so that you can experience it, too! It began for us when our next door neighbor brought over a welcome gift of Chanel perfume and a bouquet that included a huge coral charm peony (I love Paris!) which we enjoyed for over a week.
We then purchased these luscious pink blooms from the Marché Maubert, one of my favorite small street markets not far from Notre Dame. The price for peonies in early May makes them quite an indulgence but as the weeks progress, the price drops considerably.
On Sunday I went to Marché Bastille on Blvd. Richard-Lenoir. Considered one of the greats among Paris markets, their florists present towering displays of stacked peonies. At 15 euros for five stems, you can see that they are very precious, indeed! However, discounts for multiple bunches (la botte) are always given.
This armload, for photo shoots (you’ll see them soon!) earned me a generous discount.
At this time of year, peonies are literally spilling out onto the street in Paris! Another favorite spot is this teensy flower stand on Rue du Bac, just a few blocks from our apartment. Always a treat to walk past, I’ve purchased peonies and taken photos here for years (several popular prints in the shop!).

At first glance, seeing the photo of the stacked peonies I had the thought that they looked like little pink cabbages. Hmm, the Paris equivalent of “soul food”?
