We’ve had a cool and rainy mid-summer, providing a pause to relish atmospheric and calm days. Last summer, we experienced one heat wave after another with no relief, so this respite seems like a gift. Not everyone here is as appreciative but for me, the comfortable temperatures and occasional showers have made July and August much more enjoyable.
I recently invested in an antique set of Limoges china with the sweetest wild rose pattern. Officially, the pieces are props for photo shoots but it would be delightful to host a proper luncheon with them one day, too.
Although I love a rainy day for walking around Paris, recently I devoted the morning to a petit dejeuner photo shoot. The soft, even light through the tall windows showed off the translucent china to perfection. I don’t know the name of the pattern, only the pattern number, but I believe it dates from around the 1930s. The history of china is a fascinating subject to delve into – combining art, science, politics and interpersonal dramas.
I’d love to hear stories of your family china patterns, so do share below!
À beintôt!

My bridal china is Lenox Liberty, which I still love after 27 years. Set that with Wallace Romance of the Sea silverware. Hope to be able to pass these to the kids – hope more so that they will want fine china instead of just everyday. However, for years, I’ve collected various pieces that mix and match – Nasco Golden Colonial and Homer Laughlin Liberty. I just love the pattern and have various serving pieces of both, as well. Our 3rd collection is a Christmas Spode pattern which we use right after Thanksgiving.
Each one has it’s season or special event (i.e. I use the Nasco when we do high tea or a ladies’ dinner; Lenox, most other holidays other than Christmas and dinner parties.)
I’d love a special floral pattern but just don’t think we have room in the cabinets!

Hi again, Linda, I really love these traditions and passing them on to future generations. And Spode Christmas china is an absolute must at the holidays. I have three generations worth of Johnson Brothers Rose Chintz (the original English version) which is wonderful for everyday. Maybe one day you’ll get a small collection of a floral pattern to add to your collection. Thanks so much for sharing!

I don’t have formal China. My husband and I love to laugh about our big disagreement in the China section of a large department store. He insisted that he could not eat on a plate with flowers. Well the big burly guy will pretty much eat on anything. My dish collection now includes Spode Blue Italian, a full tea set of Old Country Roses gifted to me by my mother, a Royal Worcester Grovsenor chocolate set, and eleven teapots with various cups and saucers. We do lots of tea parties with my four granddaughters and hopefully they might hold onto those memories and continue the traditions.

Hi Tracy, Your collection sounds wonderful! I love Old Country Roses – such a beautiful pattern. And eleven tea pots! I’m sure your granddaughters will cherish and carry on these traditions.
All my best, Georgianna

Absolutely lovely – now I want to go out and buy some antique china – not that I have any place to put it! Thanks for bringing happiness and beauty to my day!

Hi, Mary! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. To be honest, I didn’t have any room for this set, either, but that forced me to clear out some cupboards so I feel it was a good purchase all around! My best, Georgianna
