And a beauty it has been. The sky is an azure that Mediterraneans think they have a monopoly on, the air is lilting through the trees with the slightest hint of freshness, and my thermometer reads a perfect 70. But soon, the last seaplane will pass overhead on it’s final summer flight from the islands, and we will close the windows that have been open for months, and consider lighting the fire for the first time since February.
I admit to a nap in a lounge chair on the upper lawn, tossing caution on the breeze and foregoing sunscreen, letting the warmth seep into and through me, hoping to store it up for the inevitable cool days.
It occurred to me, as I lay in my dozey haze, thinking again of Thorsten Becker’s lovely piece, I shall forever be autumn’s child, that I don’t really know what season’s child I am.
Am I Winter’s child? Most definitely not. I dislike snow, and too much darkness. While I appreciate many aspects of it, winter does not comfort me.
Summer? I adore the warmth, the growth and exuberance and the freedom, but I wilt in too much heat.
Autumn? What’s not to love? Crisp, colorful, cozy; baked root vegetables and soups; and kaleidoscope colors. But still I think not.
That leaves Spring. Well…I might be Spring’s child – the lengthening days, the unpredictable weather, the explosion of blossoms (mostly pink!), the promise of joyful days without coats or brollies or boots, riotous rainbows of color from bulbs and fruit trees and rhododendrons. Yes, I might very well be the offspring of Spring!
Although, that still doesn’t exactly feel correct.
Would it be alright (said Pooh) if I was the child of, say, late May/early June, when the first roses bloom? Or perhaps the end of January, on the day when the first brave daffodils soldier their way through the frost? Or what of mid-July, when watermelon juice dribbles down your chin and you play a brilliant game of badminton? Or a bitterly cold night of deep winter, when the hunter’s moon casts shadows over the lawns and just out of the corner of your eye, you see mythological creatures cavorting in the garden?
I will have to ponder this, over the coming year, and decide in which season’s embrace I feel most comfortable.
(In truth, I love them all.)
What Season’s Child are you?

Hello g-
I am blown away by your power with words and a little jealous…okay a lot jealous! Your blog is so beautiful! To answer your question: I love each season, for they are beautiful in their own way…but, I do favor spring and fall mostly because of the drastic changes. Can I also add that I love your home-just gorgeous!

Georgianna dear, I could read your words forever, they convey such gentle beauty and easy-to-relate-to elegance. I think you make a splendid spring child, for that season carries with it the rebirth of so many natural elements which find their way in front of your lens and talented eye.
I feel that I am an autumn child to my core, but can also relate to characteristics of each seasons, just as you expressed.
Thank you deeply for your wonderfully dear comments, it is such a joy to know you, honey!
♥ Jessica
