Returning home to the garden after nearly three weeks away, I wasn’t sure what would greet me. Would the leaves have turned? Fallen? Had it been too dry for newly planted treasures to survive?
Would the birds have abandoned us, upset to find their beloved baths untended? And what of the autumn flowering plants? Would they have felt neglect at lack of admiration for their beautiful, showy blossoms? Mostly I wondered about the roses. Dozens of buds graced nearly every bush the morning we drove away. Would they be spent? Or perhaps have kept a few blooms to welcome us home?
Holding my breath as I tiptoed through the property upon my return, I was astounded to see not just a last few rose buds, but dozens of beauties, some open, some still to come!

Low autumn sunlight filled the garden, but with a forecast for heavy rain, I quickly cut a basket full of heavenly-scented blooms and brought them inside.

Life is very hectic right now, swirling and spinning around me with abandon like the crimson leaves of our Japanese maple. Much needs attending to, and so many other subjects to post here about, but I couldn’t not acknowledge these lovely autumn roses, and thank them for such a sweet homecoming welcome.
Even at this very moment, the graceful bouquet is on my desk, looking as fresh as when I cut it over a week ago. Magic, indeed.
