Today at the Washington Park Arboretum
Rhododendron mucromulatum (Korean Rhododendron)
Before I became serious about photographing gardens, I never knew that there were plants whose normal blooming time was winter. I don’t mean “early spring”. I mean, winter. Late December, January, February. And “winter gardens” exist dedicated to these beauties – witch hazel, hellebores, cyclamen, early rhododendrons – who flourish in conditions most plants can’t endure.

Today was gloriously sunny, almost warm. It’s been weeks since I’ve done much shooting, and have been posting images here from last year, or two years ago. Dreadful, really.
But no more!
We’ve turned the corner on winter, and although we might have one last frost, or a sprinkling of snow, the change is palpable. So, for this post, all new photos from today!

The location: the Washington Park Arboretum, a favorite destination and happily only about 12 minutes from us.
I was met by the lovely Rhododendron mucronulatum (Korean Rhododendron), shown in these images, and my arrival fortuitously coincided with the mid afternoon light illuminating the delicate blossoms. It’s an expected early bloomer, but this year is already two weeks ahead of last year, when I photographed it in late February, covered with snow.

This rhodie is just outside the perimeter of the official Winter Garden at the Arboretum, where many other beautiful plants are blooming, some of which I photographed today and will share soon.
Whatever your season, or weather, this early February day, I hope it holds moments of magic and joy for you, and that in the winter garden of your spirit, bright things flourish even on a gloomy day.

Hello my lovely friend
listening to the news my ears pricked up when they said Washington was having terrible snow I thought to myself G has been saying Spring is arriving how can that be? Then i realised it wasn't the state it was the capital they were referring to! On the other side of America to you!
And so it seems you are still having alot milder weather, with these gorgeous shots, I love the pink on the blue sky.
It snowed here a little more here through the week but hasn't stayed.
Love n thoughts Kat xox
