Hello, dear friends!
Autumn is truly here with its lacy golden and crimson leaves but that needn’t preempt our desire for roses!
Early in the summer, I had the great fortune to meet up with Dawn, a passionate flower grower in the Skagit Valley an hour north of me, whose beautiful farm, All My Thyme, specializes in David Austin and other sumptuous English garden roses. You can imagine that I was in heaven walking the fields with her and seeing all the varieties she grows. We spent hours discussing the finer points and challenges of so many favorites.
We embarked on a project (not yet complete) to photograph each one, so I began creating these petit bouquets. (The first one above features blooms from my garden and the rest showcase individual varieties from Dawn’s farm.)
Each image was photographed in my studio on a plain, charcoal-colored background. To create the impression of a chalkboard, I used the Chalkboard texture from my friend Shana’s wonderful Florabella texture collection.
In other news, we’ve just returned from a fantastic visit to New York City, where we were greeted by glorious weather and the first hints of autumn color. We stayed here (with a stunning view over the San Remo apartments and Central Park) and ate in fun Upper West side bistros like this one. But mostly we were up (painfully) early to photograph the sunrise in various locations, including Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge. Will be sharing those images here soon.
Wishing you all a very happy and fulfilling week!
Much love,
G

Oh, Georgianna! These are absolutely beautiful!! Just luminous!! I love David Austin roses, too! Do ever feel like so many flowers – so little time?? I keep thinking that I need to dig more garden to grow more varieties but I can barely keep up with what I have, now! ;) Clever you to be friends of flower farmers!!! =D
In other news…. I bought a ‘slab’ of chalkboard a couple of months ago and, just this morning was considering using it. You and Sarah Gardener beat me to it! ;) I could swear it’s adding and extra glow to these flowers. Such a wonderful foil! <3
=) xxo

The colourful bouquet from your garden is gorgeous, as are the ‘petit bouquets’ of some of the different varieties of roses from All my Thyme. Always love those rose names as well. And I love that chalkboard texture you used. Looking forward to your NY pictures. Must be very special to be up and about very early in NY. Is NY really the ‘city that never sleeps’?

Georgianna! So good to see you posting again. The roses are exquisite and I love the background you used along with the texture. You have such amazing style.

Georgianna, as usual your photographs are stunning. I love the use of the trendy chalkboard in a new and interesting way and I love the patina on your board. The entire look is so refreshing and inspiring. The soft pretty colors of the flowers is beautiful against the grey chalkboard. I love how you muted and softened the chalkboard by keeping some of the white chalk on it- the perfect patina for this project.

The roses look fabulous against the grey chalkboard background G. This must have been a pleasurable fragrant shoot. Nothing says romance like an Austin rose.

Austin Roses are one of my life greatest love !!
You have to know that since I left such a big town like Genoa for living in the country I’ve been looking for an old house, to restore with outdoor space enough to make a quite big garden . and for having, finally an English Rose garden..
Now I have my rose garden where every year I add some new exemplars (now they’re more than 100) and believe me , I never have enough time to take care of them as I wish .. I love them so much, and they don’t ask for anything.. they do bloom anyway !!
About your pics .. I have no words to express how artistically you caught the real essence of these wonderful flowers ..
With sincere admiration I wish you a lovely weekend ♡
Dany

Brillant idea the grey background and using a texture to look like a blackboard. Thank for sharing that tip. David Austin roses are my favourite, they are so difficult to grow in my sandy soil. Wishing you a blessed weekend. Jen xo

Oh love David Austin roses – they are so romantic and it’s wonderful with roses that flowers also in the autumn. Here it’s definitly more autumn than summer now. Soon there will be no leaves on the trees.
Can’t wait to see your photos from NYC Georgianna. I’m going there in less than a month (!). I will be travelling to Canada (Halifax) and Albany for work and will stay a few days in Boston and NYC.
Hope you are having a lovely Sunday. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead. xo

Aaahhh…..so very beautiful! I have some serious stuff to do on this computer, but I felt the need for some beauty to prepare my mind, and you dom’t ever disappoint me – such supremely beautiful roses and the New York light. We have just come back from Europe and our roses here in Australia have been flowering non-stop since we got home, but I cannot possibly grow all the lovelies you have here.
Still, it is lovely to be able to visit and share the soul food you have here. Thankyou Georgianna
With loving thoughts Barb
