This morning in the garden
Truly, it is never too late for romance to blossom and tumble unexpectedly into one’s life. As a sweet reminder, a little story as a charming and gentle affirmation.
Upon returning from our trip a few days ago, Mom had unexpected news that my step-brother and his girlfriend had gotten married on Saturday. A happy surprise, indeed, for though they’d lived together awhile, Lee and Toni had always avowed that marriage was not important and nor needed for them to feel committed and complete. And so it had been.
Hearing of the wedding, I imagined a quick courthouse service, a formality to expedite some legal or property arrangements. But no, Mom said, it was a proper wedding, with a dress and flowers and family and formality. And everyone was tickled about it.
In fact, when they’d visited her a few days ago, Lee and Toni had been over-the-moon, starry-eyed and even giggly. No minor act of convenience, the previously eschewed wedding had turned them into dizzy school kids, elated and euphoric – Toni gushing about now being able to introduce Lee as her husband.
A lovely story – although not so unusual for live-in partners to decide to hitch it up after all, is it? But the twist and extra dash of teary-eyed, heart-warming romance in this tale isn’t the fact of a wedding having taken place.
It’s that Lee and Toni, those adamant marriage naysayers, those stalwarts of unwedded bliss, blushingly tied the knot after having lived together…
for the last…
forty-four years.
Wishing you a weekend imbued with romance, dear friends, and dreams of dreams that can and do come true.
(I’m busy editing photos and video but also popping in to see the beautiful things you’ve been up to.)
