Once upon a time (before an Apple fell on my head in the form of my first Mac computer over 20 years ago) I used to be pretty crafty. I sewed and embroidered and hand made books of poetry that I calligraphied. I still have my special stashes of ribbons, lace, satin and bows, which I guess are pretty much vintage by now.
I made these heart sachets such a long time ago, the rose oil scent I tucked inside has faded. I sold them at some craft shows and gave lots away. But these I keep in my bag of ribbons and bows, along with a few of the hair combs and pins that I decorated with millinery flowers and lace.
I used to go to the garment district in downtown Los Angeles to purchase these little satin roses and ribbon. Such fun to buy bags and bags full at wholesale prices, courtesy of my resale license.
So, a few weeks ago, after a long immersion in digital photo editing, I got the urge to make something with my hands again. I decided to make some paper cones, inspired by the beautiful work so many of you in blogland create and share – far, far ahead of me in skill and creativity. I used just whatever I had on hand, scrapbook papers, doilies, embellishments, goodies from the dollar bin at Michaels that I pick up to make cards and such.
Then I filled them with roses from the garden and scattered them around the house…
Tiny vases of water inside the cones keep the flowers fresh but make hanging a bit tricky!

Oh those are the sweetest paper cones I've seen for a long time. Love the wonderful colours and details and how well they go with the roses. :) I seldom spend time crafting either these days but I just started to make a quilt…so that's my (big) project for the fall. :) Have a lovely weekend! xo

What a joy to see hanging all over your house G! These are wonderful, so inventive and pretty :) I bet they'll be springing up all over blogland after this beautiful post! I'm so delighted to still see your roses after we have been battered with cold, wind and rain this week in Dublin, it's such a pleasure to come here and see wonderful colour from your garden still. It would be so much fun to be at your home and be surprised by all these beautiful rose filled cones at every turn! I love them Georgianna…

Dear Georgianna, These are so beautiful. I also love the satin pillows. Could we convince you to make a few of the hearts and cones for your Etsy shop?
I would like to tell your readers that your cones are not Tussy Mussies. A tussie mussie is a small bouquet made with fresh or dried herbs and a single rose in the center and surrounded and framed by a lace doily.
Seeing your beautiful photographs reminds me of stepping into one of the fine passementerie shops of France and Italy.

I'd say you still have your crafting chops! Beautiful, beautiful. You have such wonderful style.

You've got me inspired to make cones again! I used to make lots of them, and still have all my supplies…
I also used to be a calligrapher, before the days of computers (and kids!). I'd be hunched over my light table for hours at a time, getting each word exactly right. I rather miss that hobby.
